Kantha Underprint Quilt: A Tapestry of Hidden Stories

Each Kantha Underprint Quilt begins with a single length of cotton, but what you see on the surface is only the beginning. The top layer holds 8 to 12 layers of underprint, impressions left by excess ink during traditional Indian textile printing. Over weeks of intentional repetition, these underprints bloom into ethereal patterns, subtle, abstract, and utterly one-of-a-kind. No two are ever the same, and each takes over a month to produce, before a single stitch is sewn.

The reverse is crafted from a contrasting linen-cotton blend, and a cotton duck inner layer adds weight and warmth. It’s a quilt with dimension, a tactile experience that evolves with every glance and touch.

The artistry continues with a bold, handstitched blanket stitch around the edge, and running stitch through the centre, a striking detail that nods to traditional Indian textile finishing, while giving each piece its own graphic, grounded frame.
