This is a one-of-a-kind piece. Where ink drops through the top layer of hand woodblock printing over 8 to 12 printings across a month, the aged cotton beneath reveals the Coral Bloom 5 pattern - a warm, all-over ground of amber-gold, burnt orange and copper dot-forms covering the entire surface like a sun-drenched coral reef or desert sand seen from above. Shadowy floral and scroll forms ghost through the warm ground in deeper burnt sienna, and on the right, two exquisite outlined chrysanthemum forms in fine dark line-work emerge with quiet precision. Flashes of pale blue-grey drift through the warm ground, adding depth and shadow to the glowing palette. Rich, luminous and entirely unrepeatable.

The Blue Iris linen-cotton backing provides a deep, cool counterpoint to the warm amber and copper of the front - the blue of deep water beneath a sun-lit reef. A 1cm flat flange frames the cover, finished with quiet precision.
