This is a one-of-a-kind piece and part of the Checkmate series. Where ink drops through the top layer of hand woodblock printing over 8 to 12 printings across a month, the aged cotton beneath reveals the Checkmate Cosmos pattern - a warm orange-coral and amber all-over grid and check ground, alive with layer upon layer of overprinted marks. On the left, two bold concentric circle motifs in navy-blue and multicolour orbit the surface like planets in motion. Radiating sunburst and chrysanthemum forms in coral-red scatter through the centre. Deep crimson-red floral blooms emerge on the right. Scattered dark butterfly and botanical marks drift throughout the ground. Every layer of the underprint process is visible and colliding - geometric, celestial, entirely unrepeatable. There is only one.

The Damson linen-cotton backing brings a deep, moody plum-purple to the reverse - a rich counterpoint to the warm coral and amber of the front. A 1cm flat flange frames the cover on all four edges.
