Stories to tell
Dhun...
We were lucky enough to visit Dhun in Rajasthan, India, which offered a unique glimpse into an extraordinary initiative where artisan rug weavers blend their craft with storytelling, utilizing sustainable practices through the innovative Manchaha project.
This initiative empowers local weavers to create rugs that are not just beautiful but also deeply personal, embedding their own narratives and cultural heritage into each piece.
The use of eco-friendly materials and techniques ensures that every rug is made with minimal environmental impact, reflecting a commitment to sustainability.
We witnessed the intricate weaving process, interacted with the artisans, and appreciated the rich tapestry of stories and traditions woven into each rug, making Dhun a remarkable testament to the fusion of art, culture, and sustainability.
What an experience!
Creating beautiful fabrics!
Working in a textile factory in Jaipur during a 38% heat is like being in a pressure cooker, but instead of boiling over, we’re brewing something beautiful.
The artisans are right there with us, hands-on and determined, sweating it out to create the most unique prints you’ve ever seen.
Amid the heat, we’re blending colors and patterns that are as vibrant as a Jaipur sunset, turning every piece of fabric into a work of art.
Sure, we’re dripping with sweat, but when you see the stunning bedlinen we’re crafting, you’ll know it’s worth every drop.
A Family Affair
Dabu printing is a traditional Indian resist-printing technique that involves applying a mud paste to fabric, then sprinkling it with sawdust before dying, to create intricate and beautiful designs.
This age-old craft is deeply rooted in rural artisan communities, where families often work together, passing down their skills from generation to generation. This collaborative process empowers entire communities, as each family member contributes to the craft, sustaining both cultural heritage and livelihood.
The process itself is sustainable, using eco-friendly dyes and materials, with many artisans choosing organic fabrics to reduce environmental impact. Each piece of Dabu-printed textile is a unique creation, as slight variations in the handcrafting process make every print one of a kind, carrying the individual touch and creativity of the artisans who bring it to life. This fusion of artistry, sustainability, and community spirit highlights Dabu printing as a precious and empowering tradition in sustainable textile design.
We have included two beautiful cushions in dabu print in our collection this year in our silk collection. Simply stunning!
