There is a sound we know well from our trips to Rajasthan - the steady thud of a carved wooden block meeting cloth. It has echoed through the villages around Jaipur for centuries, and it is the sound that makes Anna feel at home in Jaipur and the sound that brought Design Alchemy Collective into being.
Wood block printing is not just decoration. It is a living craft, carrying family lineage and extraordinary patience in every impression. Its history stretches back over 2,000 years - Indian hand-printed cotton was already being traded to Egypt, Persia and Europe long before industrial textiles existed. Jaipur's place at the heart of it all was cemented in 1727, when Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II founded the city and artisan communities, among them the renowned Chhipa printers, settled there with generations of dyeing and printing knowledge. It is these same families, in many cases, whose hands we now work with directly.
Every block begins as seasoned teak or sheesham, hand-carved over days, line by painstaking line, one block for every colour in the design. The prepared fabric is stretched, then printed by hand, each impression pressed and aligned perfectly against the last, metre after metre. Historically they used dyes drawn from indigo, madder root, turmeric and pomegranate. No machine. Just a steady hand built on years of practice.
At Design Alchemy Collective, our pieces begin as the underprint - the cloth laid beneath the fabric being block printed above it. With each impression of the block, excess dye drops through the top layer, building colour and pattern on the cloth beneath that was never planned and can never be repeated. Traditionally discarded, we saw something else in it: fabric already rich with hand-applied colour, depth and imperfection, one of a kind in a way mass production can never replicate. We work directly with block printing studio in Jaipur to find this cloth at exactly the right moment and bring it home to you, transformed.
